The Gates of Hell – Truth and Lies (2006 – 10)
These paintings are based on the ignominious slogan above the gates at Auschwitz. Each canvas repeats a version of the ornamental design replacing the, “Arbeit Macht Frei”, with another popular phrase.
I have used the title, “The Gates of Hell” to reference Rodin’s large door with the same name. In his epic work I feel the outrage and dismay towards the depravity of human behaviour. I chose not to paint graphic images of destruction but want to impact the viewer with how easy it is to replace conscience with a convenient slogan.
